Ginger by the Park

Hidden behind a park under canopies of trees in the quiet part of the Former French Concession area, the restaurant houses art pieces and handmade crafts that the owner collected over the course of her travels in Asia. Our intention was to display the owner’s interest in arts and traditional culture in a contemporary context while providing a better entry and dining experience.

Numerous tall mirrors, located behind the bar counter, reflected the bold art piece across the high ceiling space. The long linear bar counter, which finished with traditional handwoven ethnic minority fabrics, guided the customers to the staircase. We placed a communal table under the high window, allowed diners to enjoy the view of the park in their good companies of friends and family.

Sharing of personal story

We worked closely with Mrs Shi, a Chinese ethnic minority villager who hand weaves traditional ethnic fabrics. The shininess of their traditional garments represents the wealth and importance of each family. Each household hand weaves, dyes and beats the fabrics slightly differently from one another. At the end, Mrs Shi thanked us for using their fabrics and said, “With this project and opportunity, I could try to convince others to stay and work in their village instead of migrating to urban cities.”
